With spherical body and tubular neck slightly flaring to the mouth and extruded to a trough spout, a strong handle linking the mouth and body, on flat foot, the shoulder moulded under the glaze with a lozenge lattice, each panel containing a raised lozenge between moulded bands, similar moulded lozenges scattered on the underside, small repair to tip of spout, otherwise intact, light surface iridescence

The glaze and technique seen on this ewer are very similar to those found on two other vessels sold in these Rooms, one, similar in scale to this, as lot 286 on 12 October 1999; the other, on a substantially larger scale, as lot 50 on 23 October 2007. The catalogue entry to the second of these had a full discussion of the group and its attribution. The moulding on the present ewer with its repeated moulded lozenges is typical of the group. The unusal form of the spout is similar to that of a metal ewer in the Khalili Collection (Mikhail B. Piotrovsky and John Vrieze (gen. ed.), Earthly Beauty, Heavenly Art, Amsterdam, 2002, no.203, pp.228-9).
