Lot Essay

The design of this binding with the central circular medallion with tapering finials above and below and the four spandrels is typical of the Mamluk period. Similarly the blind tooling of knots or interlace covering the surface is not unusual. What is exceptional however is the delicate cut-out design within the main panels of decoration.
