IRAN, LATE 15TH CENTURY
With sloping cusped rim on short foot, the interior with a central roundel containing a dragon with a long scrolling tail surrounded by cloudbands, the cavetto with two smaller similar dragons alternated with bands of repeating floral design, the rim with a dotted motif, the exterior with splashes of blue glaze, repaired breaks and small area of restoration around the rim

Lot Essay

Dragons are regularly depicted on Timurid Pottery, copied from the Chinese originals. The present dragon however has no Chinese precedent and is a complete invention of the Iranian potter.

The bowl is typical of pottery that has been attributed to Tabriz in the late Timurid period. It has the wide base ring and, to the eye, a high quartz content, covered with a high shine glassy glaze.
