Lot Essay
It is rare to find the plain cavetto seen on this lot and the preceding dish; the composition is more normally found on smaller bowls. Here the combination of colours is also unsual, being found frequently in contemporaneous Syria, but not in the Timurid empire. Traditionally the colour scheme, of slightly earlier date, was associated with Veramin, but this attribution does not feature at all in the most thorough study of Timurid ceramics (Lisa Golombek, Robert B. Mason and Gauvin A. Bailey, Tamerlane's Tableware, Costa Mesa and Ontario, 1996). The potting, back and foot relate to those of the following lot and it is possible that this dish is of the same origin. Please see also the note to the preceding lot.
