Lot Essay

This dish is clearly a later survival of the blue and white flower scroll design that first appears at Iznik in around 1530 (Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby, Iznik, London, 1989, nos.198-202, pp.122-3). What makes it very unusual is the combination of light grey and blue, demonstrating that the grey colour is very much purposeful at times. Here it emphasises the delicacy of the centre when compared to he border with its stronger colour and denser design.
