The form of this mug is taken directly from a metalwork prototype. A small number of other examples are known, all of which can be dated to the last two decades of the sixteenth century (Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby, Iznik, London, 1989, nos.616 and 619-621, pp.276-7). A mug in the David Collection, Copenhagen, is particularly similar to the present lot with its two bands of floral decoration (no.619; also Kjeld v. Folsach, Art from the World of Islam in the David Collection, Copenhagen, 2001, no.274, p.191).
