This is a very rare pair of Ottoman armguards. Made of steel, the decoration is overlaid in silver sheet that is decorated with engraving, gilt and niello. The designs that are used for the surface are well known from the sheaths of daggers and swords but armour of this genre is very rare indeed. Each has a basic steel form over which has been hammered a sheet of silver, curled under around the edges, and then very finely engraved and inlaid.

The shape with the triple groove on the main panel and the band of rosettes round the edges is identical to that of an armguard that was almost certainly a part of the booty captured after the siege of Vienna and which is now in Karlsruhe (Ernst Petrasch, Reinhard Sänger, Eva Zimmermann and Hans Georg Majer, Die Karlsruher Tüurkenbeute, Munich, 1991, no.26, p.91).
