Poetry, Persian manuscript on gold-speckled cream paper, 14ff. plus 2 fly-leaves. each folio with 12ll. of elegant black naskh arranged in two columns with double gold intercolumnar rule, catchwords, headings in white nasta'liq in gold cartouches within panels of gold and polychrome illumination, the frontispiece with similarly illuminated headpiece, colophon signed Muhammad Husayn al Husayni and dated Jumada al-'Awal AH 965, text panels laid down within gold and polychrome rules on variously coloured paper with gold floral illumination, folios coming out of binding, some waterstaining and soiling, particularly in the margins, minor repairs, later red morocco covered with paper

Lot Essay

This manuscript comprises folios from the Guy u Chaugan (also known as the Halnama of 'Arifi (d. circa AH 853/1449 AD). The only work recorded by Muhammad Husayn al-Husayni, by whom the manuscript is copied, is an abridged copy of the Khamsah of Nizami copied in Qazvin in AH 982/1574-75 AD, now in the Topkapi Museum (F.E. Karatay and J.M. Rogers, Topkapi Sarayi Muzesi Kutuphanesi, Farsca Yazmalar Katalogu, Istanbul, 1961, cat. no. 483).
