Lot Essay
The inscription on the top contains a verse from the Gulistan of Sa'di and the signature of Hajji 'Abbas. Round the body are verses in Persian in praise of the kashkul including the name of the maker, 'Abbas.
An almost identical kashkul is in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. Originally catalogued as being dated AH 1207, more recently it has been published as dating from the late 19th century (Iran in the Hermitage, exhibition catalogue (in Russian), St. Petersburg, 2004, no.147, p.130). It entered the museum from the Bachmanov collection in 1925. Another very closely related example is in the Museum of the Gulistan Palace, Tehran (Arthur Upham Pope, A Survey of Persian Art, London, 1938, pl.1394D). A further example was sold in these Rooms 9 October 1990. It was particularly relevant to the discussion over the date as it was decorated on the underside with a very elegant gold dedicatory nasta'liq inscription dated AH 1325/1902-3 AD).
