The faceting seen on the hilt of this dagger is a rare form of decoration that dates back to the classic Mughal period. It was the design that covered the exquisite emerald cup and cover sold in these Rooms 24 September 2003, lot 168, and is also used on an unpublished rock crystal bowl in the Victoria and Albert Museum. It is used on a rock crystal hilt that was dated to the 18th century (Silk and Stone, the Art of Asia, the Third Hali Annual, London, 1996, p.212, Marukh Desai advertisement).
