It seems likely that the miniature here pre-dates the calligraphy on the reverse. It is done in the style typical of the late 16th and early 17th century, when artists such as Kesu Das and Basawan were being influenced by European prints and paintings. The humanistic concern for true portraiture and individuality are traits which are typical of Mughal work independent from the Iranian tradition, and the European influence provided a new host of subjects, such as this, to which they could be applied.
