The golden collector's cabinet of richly mottled oak is conceived in the early Victorian French antique fashion. While its flowered and reed-banded stand is sculpted in the Louis XV 'picturesque' manner with Love's shell, its doors, concealing its drawer-nest, incorporate triumphal arched tablets that are inlaid, in Louis Quatorze 'boulle' fashion, with a brass-inlaid cypher ensigned with the Hope family crest. The crest of a broken globe beneath a rainbow issuing from clouds, is that of the Hopes of Deepdene, Surrey and Castle Blayney Hope Castle, Ireland, whose motto is 'At Spes Non Fracta'. The acanthus-wreathed cipher is that of Adéle Hope (d. 1884), wife of Henry Thomas Hope, who aggrandised Deepdene in the 1840s.
