Having proved an outstanding tax counsel, Sir Philip Shelbourne joined Rothschilds in 1962 to set up their Corporate Finance Department, before being appointed by Margaret Thatcher to head The British National Oil Corporation. He became the Chairman of Britoil before it fell to BP's aggrandisement and was knighted in 1984. Sir Philip Shelbourne's taste was one of grandeur and opulence. He admired the flamboyant baroque and the rococo, which he cleverly balanced with the Empire and Biedermeier spirit at Myles Place. Sir Philip Shelbourne is also remembered for his keen interest in the Brooke Hospital for Animals, and his devoted support for veterinary welfare.

Each with a shaped later verde marble top above an undulating hatched frieze hung with circular rings issuing laurel swags, on scrolled cabriole legs headed by diminishing husks and capped by acanthus, joined by an arched undertier with pierced shell, on claw and ball feet
