Depicted naked with one hand raised to her lips, standing on waves and a dolphin's head, on a circular moulded green marble plinth, the base inscribed 'AMPHITRITE' and 'E. Deplechin' and stamped with serial number '58842/35'

Valentin Eugène Deplechin was born in Roubaix on May 27, 1852, he studied under E. Delaplanche and at the School of Fine Arts in Lille. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in the 1890s, winning a third class medal in 1893 and a bronze medal at the Paris 1900 Exposition Universelle. Best known for his genre and classical subjects the present lot depicts the sea-goddess Amphitrite, consort of Neptune.
