'Fern is based on actual measurements of a large fern leaf. The gradually decreasing distances in the painting and the natural unevenness of the graduation were copied from a fern. Each narrow cylinder in the painting is as wiode as the space between left and right stems on the main stem. This space grows gradually smaller as the pair of opposite stems near the tip.'
