Morland received his early training from his father, Henry Robert Morland (1719-1797), painter, engraver and art dealer. During this time he copied and imitated paintings, particularly seventeenth Century Dutch landscapes and a number of sea views after Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714-1789). He exhibited works at the Royal Academy and the Society of Artists from 1770 onwards. His work became immensely popular through its distribution in print form. Throughout his career, his forte was the portrayal of genre scenes from everyday rustic and picturesque landscape.
