A FAENZA BLUE-GROUND TONDINO
CIRCA 1520-1535
The central yellow-ground circular medallion painted with a winged putto holding a palm frond in one hand and a sling in the other, a staff passing diagonally between his legs, standing on a green mound with green drapery on the right, the white well with scrolls and edged with bands of blue dentil ornament, the blue-ground broad border reserved with brightly coloured grotteschi with leaping dolphins, masks, pendant swags, palmettes and scrolling foliage, the underside with concentric blue bands
9 9/16 in. (24.5 cm.) diam.
