A RARE LARGE FAMILLE VERTE EWER
KANGXI, CIRCA 1715-20
With ovoid body, loop handle, slender cylindrical neck and wide spout all supported on a flaring foot, enamelled around the body with four large ogival panels enclosing ribboned emblems and precious vessels, alternating with peony, prunus and chrysanthemum branches, each panel divided by scrolling lotus sprays, the shoulder with four large tied emblems and the neck with further tied emblems divided by a collar of ruyi heads around the base of the neck

Lot Essay

It would appear that no other ewers decorated in this palette are published. However, a smaller famille verte powder-blue-ground ewer of very similar form is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, from the Salting Bequest, and is illustrated by W. B. Honey, Chinese Porcelain, London, 1927, plate 117, fig. b, and by A. du Boulay, Chinese Porcelain Pleasures and Treasures, no. 84, p. 88. A blue and white ewer also of very similar form, painted with floral design and bearing the arms of Dom Pedro de Lancastre Silveira Valente Castelo Branco Vasconcelos Barreto e Meneses, which can be dated to 1715-1720, is illustrated by Nuno de Castro, Chinese Porcelain and the Heraldry of the Empire, Opporto, 1988, p. 52. Compare also the blue and white ewer with powder-blue ground sold in these Rooms, The China Trade, 28 April 1999, lot 102.
