The chair model was originally designed by van de Velde for use in his house, Bloemenwerf, Brussels, 1894-1895. These chairs were produced in ash with woven straw seats. However, further examples were requested by van de Velde's clients in more exotic woods such as padouk and mahogany and with leather or fabric upholstered seats. The mahogany, upholstered versions were originally commissioned for the house of Madame De Craene-Van Mons, Brussels, 1898.
