ARRHENIUS, Svante (1859-1927). "Ueber den Einfluss des Atmosphärischen Kohlensäuregehalts auf die Temperatur der Erdoberfläche", offprint from Bihang till K. Svenska Vet.-Akad. Handlingar, volume 22, no.1. Stockholm: Morstedt, 1896. 8° (225 x 142mm). Original printed wrappers. FIRST EDITION.
ARRHENIUS, S. "Ueber die Wärmeabsorption durch Kohlensäure und ihren Einfluss auf die Temperatur der Erdoberfläche", offprint from Kongl. Vetenskaps-Akademiens Förhandligar, no.1, pp.25-58. Stockholm, 1901. 8° (213 x 140mm). Modern wrappers. FIRST EDITION
These seminal works on global warming contain Arrhenius' calculations relating to carbonic acid - carbon dioxide. Arrhenius predicted that the release of carbon dioxide through burning coal, oil and natural gas, would lead to a significant rise in temperatures worldwide. The first to predict man-made global warming, Arrhenius' calculations and predictions were impressive but are now considered underestimated. Arrhenius was also the first to quantify the greenhouse effect. His original crude estimate of about 5 degrees centigrade warming from a doubling of carbon dioxide is larger but not greatly different from the 1.5-4.5 degrees centigrade now estimated. (2)
