Founded in 1799, the map- and globe-making firm of Charles Smith & Son moved to 63 Charing Cross Road in 1870, where it remained until it was acquired by Philip & Son in 1888.

SMITH & SON, 63 CHARING CROSS, made up of 12 hand-coloured gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees 0°-180°-0° and hours XII-I-XII, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with symbols, an ungraduated Greenwich meridian, analemma in the Pacific, ocean currents and Cook's voyages shown, some countries outlined in colour (the British Empire in red), partial coast of Antarctica delineated with Mt. Erebus An active vol 12,400 ft high (some staining and minor manuscript repair), semi-circular meridian graduated 90-0-90, on a turned mahogany column with 'Y'-shaped stand and three bun feet.
