Lot Essay

In the spring of 1877 John MacWhirter visited America, crossing the Prairies on the Pacific Railway and visited Salt Lake City en route to San Francisco. On his return to Scotland he exhibited a painting entitled Salt Lake City Utah at the Royal Scottish Academy (No.299) in their annual exhibition of 1878.

Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 by a group of Mormon pioneers and the newly completed Tabernacle, 1867 and Temple still under construction can be clearly seen in this picture.
