Lot Essay

In 1872 William Simpson travelled to China for the wedding of the Emperor, subsequently visiting Japan and returning by way of America. In May 1873 Simpson visited Yosemite and was hugely impressed by majesty of the place and recorded "waterfalls unsurpassed for size or beauty" and that "Eden itself could not have been more lovely". He and his party stayed at the Leidig Hotel situated at the foot of the Yosemite Falls
