A FRENCH PERCUSSION PISTOL PRESENTED BY PRINCE LOUIS NAPOLÉON, BUILT ON THE DELVIGNE PATENT SYSTEM FOR AN EXPANDING BULLET, SIGNED FINI PAR GASTINNE RENETTE À PARIS
CIRCA 1845-49
With browned twist octagonal barrel with multi-groove rifled bore, finely inlaid with an elaborate spray of gold scrolling foliage over the rear, inlaid with gold lines at the breech and muzzle, inscribed 'Donne Par Le Pce Louis Napoléon' and fitted with backsight incorporating a folding leaf, engraved case-hardened patent breech, case-hardened breech tang engraved with a close-set pattern of spiralling scrollwork matching the breech, the lock and mounts also en suite and the former signed in gold (the hammer spur chipped), walnut half stock, the butt carved with scrolling foliage, stirrup ramrod with cup for bullet-seating, and retaining much original finish, St. Etienne proof.
