DISRAELI, Benjamin, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield (1804-1881). Autograph letter signed ('D') to his sister, Sarah ('My Dear[es]t'), n.p., n.d. [February? 1840], 4 pages, 8vo. Provenance: the Spiro Family Collection.
A characteristically entertaining letter to Disraeli's much loved elder sister. 'Everything is very dull, nothing is thought of but the Q[ueen]'s marriage & nobody ever mentions it unless the balladmongers, who may be heard in every quarter chanting'; he quotes from a disrespectful contemporary ditty about Prince Albert, 'They say I'm a ninny and not worth a guinny But Vic, she declares I'm a trump, etc. So much for the spirit of loyalty in 1840'.
Disraeli's close and admiring friendship with the Queen began only in the 1860s. The letter refers also to the debate on privilege (over the libel case of Stockdale versus Hansard, heard from June 1839 - March 1840).
