RUSKIN, John (1819-1900). Autograph letter signed ('J. Ruskin') to an unidentified recipient, n.p., [1866], referring to an enclosed drawing, which he describes as 'the best, by a good deal, which I have as yet seen done by any unassisted reader of that book of mine'; the artist, 'must have both great natural disposition for drawing, and singular resolution in practice', and making arrangements to meet her, one page, 8vo (the upper margin, with superscription, excised), backed onto brown paper with the drawing in question, a pen-and-ink drawing of a shell, annotated 'By Emilie Barrington, 1866'.
The drawing may well be by the biographer and novelist Emilie Barrington (née Wilson, 1841-1933), who was 'an amateur artist ... taking drawing lessons from Arthur Hughes, and an inveterate visitor to art exhibitions and artists' studios' (ODNB): though if this is the case, the attribution must be noted after her marriage in 1868.
