Aldine 8° (158 x 95mm). Aldine anchor device A2 on final verso. With blanks a2 and q7. Italic type 1:80. One- to 6-line initial spaces with guide-letter. Pages ruled in red. 19th-century red morocco gilt by ?Derome, Aldine anchor device added to sides probably by Storr at Grantham, gilt spine with central fleuron, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Provenance: Jacques Auguste de Thou (inscription at end, inscription washed from title) -- ?Marquis d'Espinay (inscription noting the De Thou ownership, washed from title) -- Sir John Thorold (1734-1815) and/or Sir John Hayford Thorold (1773-1831), Syston Park armorial bookplate (sale Sotheby's, 12 December 1884, lot 196, £2.10).
THE DE THOU COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of the collected poems of this Renaissance humanist and alchemist, Augurello. It was preceded in print only by part I of the Carmina (1491). Augurello's alchemical poem, "Chrysopoeia", was published in 1515. The italic type used to print this and other Aldine octavo volumes was based on the hand of Francesco Griffo, calligrapher and type designer.
