8° (158 x 95mm). Aldine device A2 on title and final verso. Italic type 1:80 and Greek 4. 3- to 4-line initial spaces with guide-letter. French red straight-grained morocco gilt by P. Lefevre (signed at spine foot), wide floral border between double fillets on sides, flat spine with floral tools on a criblé ground, gilt turn-ins, green watered silk liners, gilt edges (very slight wear at extremities, inner hinges strengthened). Provenance: Berlin, Royal Library (stamp and cancellation; sale Hertz, July 1851, lot 112) -- [Charles W. Clark (1871-1933; Library I, 7; his library purchased by:) -- Dr. Rosenbach].
First Aldine edition. Ausonius wrote on a wide variety of subjects and "particularly delighted in verse catalogues" of, for instance, the 12 Caesars, the Seven Sages, cities of the world, etc. His poem, Cento Nuptialis, is considered the best known Virgilian cento, a poem constructed of single lines derived from other authors.
