4 volumes, 4° (231 x 301mm). Title in red and black, 71 engraved portraits by J.F. Cars including frontispiece, and 6 maps of which 5 folding. (Some browning which is heavy on a few leaves, some spotting, and a few marginal tears.) Contemporary French morocco gilt attributed to Boyet, covers with the arms of Louis d'Orléans [Olivier 2571, fer 6], spines directly lettered and tooled to a floral design (staining to covers of vol. 1, small repair to lower cover of vol. II, a few scuffs and soil-marks, extremities lightly rubbed, vertical creases to spine). Provenance: Louis Ier, duc d'Orléans (1703-1752, binding and stamps) -- William Beckford (sold 21 March 1884, lot 177; tipped-in lot description) -- Archibald Philip, Earl of Rosebery (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION IN MOROCCO BINDING WITH ARMS OF LOUIS, DUC D'ORLéANS, attributed to Boyet in the 1884 sale catalogue. This richly illustrated work was written whilst Vertot was 'secrétaire interprète' to the Duc d'Orléans; it includes detailed maps of the Mediterranean region, plans of Malta and the fine series of portraits by J.F.
