Lot Essay

The scene is that related in the Aeneid I:314-371, of Venus, mother of Aeneas, appearing to him for the second time. The Trojans were shipwrecked near Carthage and Aeneas, accompanied by Achates, set out to explore. Venus, disguised as a huntress, interrupted their wanderings to direct them to Dido's palace. The scene derives from an engraving of a painting by Angelica Kauffmann executed in 1768.
