RUSSIAN (VOLOGDA), 17TH CENTURY
The story beginning in the upper centre, a semi-circular segment of sky opening to reveal Lord Sabaoth seated on a throne, St. Gabriel kneeling before Him in acceptance of his task, the archangel depicted again in the lower left, holding the orb inscribed with Christ's initials, next advancing to the enthroned Mother of God, her feet resting on a pedestal, holding a skein of scarlet wool, her right hand raised in speech, the rays of Holy Spirit emanating from the mouth of God touching her halo; the faces rendered in the typical style of the 17th century, the floor laid with terracotta tiles, the profusion of red and green architectural elements highlighted with white balustrades, the corners of the border painted to emulate carved Baroque frames of the period
