RUSSIAN (STROGANOV SCHOOL), 17TH CENTURY
The narrative begins on the lower left with the Mocking of Christ, standing in the centre, wearing the crown of thorns and a royal hiton, holding a staff, surrounded by the agitated crowd, among them the Temple's priests, Roman soldiers, lay people blowing horns and in the foreground a man with a drum, two men supported on the shoulders of some of the attendees, beating Christ on the head with long sticks; above a complete image of the Crucifixion with the sloping body of Christ on the large cross, flanked by the two thieves, his Mother, John, Magdalene and the other mourning figures at the left, to the right a number of Jews attending the Roman soldiers, giving Christ a sponge soaked in vinegar and piercing his side, the sun and moon on the corners; to the right, the Deposition, Lamentation and Embalmment; below, an image of the 'Mother, Do Not Weep for Me' with the Mother of God in the sarcophagus supporting her Son and the mourners around, the cross behind, and the Mandylion supported by angels above, the entire composition rendered in great detail on ochre ground, the gilt riza with incised folite scrolls
