Représentant le front de mer à Canton, sur la partie gauche, les 'Hongs' avec le comptoir Français et le comptoir Américain et son jardin, identifiés par leurs pavillons, sur la partie droite et masquant en partie la ville, le fort Hollandais de la rivière des perles, un paysage montagneux en arrière plan, des jonques de commerce et de nombreux sampans à quai déchargeant des marchandises, au mouillage ou naviguant à la voile

Lot Essay

Very large views of the waterfront at Canton are rare and are sometimes attributed to Sunqua active in Canton (1830-1865) or Youqua, also active in Canton (1840-1870). This view is painted before 1847 when the Church was erected and most probably after the great fire of 1840.
A large Chinese School painting depicting the Bund in Shanghai was sold at Sotheby's New York, 19 March 2007, lot 365.
