Davis designed his first significant Gothic house in 1838 for William Paulding. Overlooking the Tappan Zee section of the Hudson River at Tarrytown, it was named Knoll and later renamed Lyndhurst by its subsequent owner George Merritt. It was expanded under the direction of Davis in 1867.
