A lacquered wood cabinet on stand
Japan, late 19th century
The front of the cabinet with two hinged doors, mounted with a large gilt metal locker formed by two phoenix, the doors decorated on the outside with a compact design of large peony flowers, carved in low relief and lacquered red and green, the interior of the doors decorated each with a large prancing karashishi, the inside with four long drawers above two small drawers, all with metal handles and decorated with large sprays of red peony on a black lacquered ground, the sides, the top and the stand similarly decorated, the stand on four short cabriole legs ending each in a stylised carved and gilt peony-head, engraved gilt metal kanagu with foliage, some restoration

Acquired by an ancestor of the present owner around 1900 in Japan.
