Lot Essay

The portrait is most probably taken from an engraving after a painting by J. B. Closterman. Another example almost certainly by the same hand dated 1704 is in the Cuckfield Museum Trust (C.48). The biscuit frame at one time perhaps gilded was probably painted black on Queen Anne's death in 1714; traces of black enamel remain.
