The tall figure standing with left hand raised to hold the edges of the long, flowing robes, lacquered and painted in gilding with lotus and floral scroll, left partially open at the chest to reveal the jewelled necklace, the hems carved in relief with further lotus and floral scroll, the hair pulled up in an elaborate coiffure above the heavy jowled face

A similarly decorated, though larger, dry lacquer figure of Guanyin, with a carved inscription dating the figure to the bingwu year of the Wanli period (1606), was included in the exhibition, The Minor Arts of China III, Spink and Son, London, 1987, p. 18, no. 10.
