Lot Essay

Adorned with star spangled frames, these two paintings recall the nation's patriotic mood following victory over Spain in the Spanish- American War (1898). During this war, there were several camps named after President McKinley including one in Honolulu, Hawaii, possibly depicted here. Despite the recent military activity and the nation's burgeoning military prowess, there is a quietness depicted in these encampment scenes which reflects the returned state of peace in America by 1903.
