Lot Essay

Born in 1931, "Lonnie" Donegan's mixture of folk, blues, jazz and ragtime influenced a generation of British and UK musicians that would come to fame in the 1960s. This blend of musical styles was called "skiffle" and when his debut single in 1956 became a gold record in Britain and made The Top Ten in the United States, Donegan would be known as The King of Skiffle. Van Morrison, John Lennon, Pete Townshend, Graham Nash, and Eric Clapton, to name but a few, all acknowledge his significant contribution in shaping their musical styles.
