Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, Italian (1475-1564)
Peter Paul Rubens, Flemish (1577-1640)

Both Michelangelo and Rubens are known to have painted this subject circa 1530 and 1600, respectively. The artist was most likely familiar with the Rubens version in the collection of the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden (gal. no. 71). Michaelangelo's painting is in collection of the National Gallery, London.
