A GRAECO-PERSIAN BLUE CHALCEDONY SCARABOID
LATE 5TH CENTURY B.C.
Engraved with a two-humped Bactrian camel in profile to the right, with detailed fringe of fur along neck and chest, lead-rein falling from its muzzle, 1¼ in. (3.2 cm.) wide; and a group of mainly stamp seals, including a Sassanian red and white mottled stone domed seal, with male bust and Pahlavi inscription; another, chalcedony with recumbent stag; another, cornelian with winged horse; another, green stone with winged griffin; another, bronze with crescent over monogram, all circa 4th-5th Century A.D.; a Roman cornelian intaglio,with profile head of Zeus-Serapis above an eagle, flanked by two standards surmounted by figures of Nike offering Victory wreaths, circa 1st-2nd Century A.D., 5/8 in. (1.7 cm.) high; a Neo-Babylonian chalcedony duck seal; a base of another, late 2nd/early 1st millennium B.C.; a Jemdet Nasr green stone hemispheroid seal, with drilled gazelle, remains of bronze suspension hoop, circa 3100-2900 B.C., 7/8 in. (2.1 cm.) diam.; a group of other seals and intaglios, some of later date; and a Graeco-Roman marble female head, her plaited hair with medial parting, tied at the back, circa 1st Century B.C., 1¾ in. English private collection, acquired by the present owner's grandfather, the Revd. George Henry Judd, F.R.G.S., in the late 19th/early 20th Century. An accompanying ink inscribed label reads "Assyrian, from Nineveh, Oct. 1900".
