Lot Essay

Na'im al-Din was an obscure Shirazi scribe of the late 15th/early 16th century, whose numerous recorded works were thus far dated between AH 887 (1482-83 AD) and AH 915 (1510 AD) (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va Asar-e Khosh-Nevisan, Vol. III, Tehran, 1348 sh, p. 946 and F.E. Karatay, Topkapi Sarayi Muzesi Kutuphanesi, Farsca Yazmalar Katalogu, Istanbul, 1961, nos. 618, 638, 512). This is therefore his earliest recorded work. Some of his other works include a copy of Attar's Mantiq al-Tayr dated 1493 AD and a copy of the Khamsa of Nizami dated 1501 AD, both in the Bodleian Library, Oxford (Mss. Elliot 246 and 192), and another Khamsa of Nizami dated AH 1510 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
