Lot Essay

This table has an elaborately carved frieze, centered by Venus' shell flanked by scrolling foliage on a dotted trellis ground. Stylistically it bridges the gap between the earlier more curvaceous Irish tables with heavily carved aprons and animalistic cabriole legs and the more restrained rectilinear tables of the last quarter of the 18th Century. A table of similar design was sold anonmously, Christie's, London, 6 April 2000, lot 214 and is illustrated in The Knight of Glin and J. Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven and London, 2007, p. 231, cat. no. 108.
