Dated 1879, gilt crowned globe mark, shape no. 1348, signed L.(ouis) Solon
Of flask form, the cylindrical neck flanked by gilt enriched lug handles, finely painted and hand-tooled in white slip with a putto seated at a table surrounded by theatrical masks, further masks strung above, the neck, side and foot with pendant arabesque fixtures suspended from drapery and entwined with berried vine
10¼ in. (26 cm.) high

Lot Essay

Solon's Illustrated Journal records this vase as one of a pair completed between the 11th of February and the 11th of March 1879.

See the archival index on page 58 for a period photograph of the present lot. It is interesting to note that the archival image must have been taken that year as it illustrates the work prior to gilding.
