Referencing the formal qualities found in the paintings of the Flemish Primitives such as Petrus Christus and Rogier van der Weijden, Dolron masterfully captures in Xteriors, an ongoing series since 2001, the essence of light, colour and composition. Her monumental portraits -- at once painterly and photographic -- embody enigma, stillness and the interplay of light and dark. Of her laborious image-making process, Dolron explains, 'As a setting for my photos I used the country house of Oud Amelisweerd [near the Dutch province of Utrecht]. The light penetrates the windows there in a way that is very sharp and bright, while the dark parts merge completely. These are gigantic contrasts that you can never capture technically in one go. I have to do it then with the aid of a number of compositions that I weld together with the computer.' (quoted in NRC Handelsblad, p.85)
Dolron's works have been shown internationally in dozens of solo and group exhibitions, including a retrospective in 2005 at the Fotomuseum Den Haag; the solo show Exaltation, Gaze, Xteriors at Institut Néerlandais, Paris; a 2007 show at Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Foundation Corboud, Cologne; as well as the key group exhibition Netherlands Now at Maison Européene de la Photographie in 2006. Her works are held in many private, corporate and institutional collections, including The Buhl Collection, New York; DG Bank, Frankfurt; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. She lives and works in Amsterdam.
