Lot Essay

This drawing shows a mausoleum excavated in March 1674 by worksmen repairing the Via Flaminia just outside of Rome. The tomb's true treasure turned out to be the mural paintings decorating its vault, walls and niches. The inscription below one of the pictures identified it as the resting place of Quintus Nasonius Ambrosius, and his wife Nasonia Urbica.
