TWO RARE 'CARRE D'AS' FROM THE MAGNIFICENT 2000 VINTAGE
The two lots have been stored in optimun conditions are offered in original Duclot presentation cases
A note about the vintage by Michael Broadbent :
Unsurprisingly, the 2000 vintage was eagerly awaited with a combination of hope and anxiety; merchants anticipated substantial trade to mark the millennium. In the event, most people were reasonably satisfied.
The growing season, as always in Bordeaux, was by no means straight-forward. The New Year and spring were mild, with above-average temperatures in March, resulting in early budbreak. However, though the warmth continued in April and May, it was wet, flowering starting at the end of the month. The damp conditions continued through a depressingly cloudy and humid June and July. What saved the day was almost unbroken sunshine without rain from August through September, resulting in fine ripening conditions favouring the Merlot and, for those who waited and timed it right, Cabernet Sauvignon. Unquestionably, this was a very good year, fairly uniform in quality with some really outstanding wines.
Château Latour: Lovely colour, deep, velvety; delicious nose, sweet, spicy, forth-coming, almost caramelly richness packed with fruit; lovely flavour and balance, tannic. Great future. *****
Château Margaux: Fairly deep, relaxed; very good, fragrant, whiff of coffee; medium-sweet, attractive but very tannic. *****
Château Haut-Brion: Richly coloured, showing some maturity; slightly singed, earthy, very sweet - almost brown-sugar nose; full flavoured but dry, lean, fine tannins, great length. *****
Pétrus: Distinctive, almost unique in its character and flavour. Richly coloured, maturing; nose initiallymuffled, low-keyed, but harmonious and fleshy; surprisingly dry, more severe than its appearance, good length, very 'hot', dry finish. *****
