[NAUNTON, Sir Robert (1563-1635)]. Contemporary manuscript copy of Fragmenta Regalia, or Observations on the late Queene Elizabeth her Tymes and Favourites, [England, 17th century], ruled in red, written in brown ink in a neat secretary hand, title page in red and brown ink with two index columns, 122 pages, small folio, (285 x 183mm), pagination (title page restored, occasional dampstaining, marginal repair to final leaf, marginal hole to final two leaves). 19th century calf, the covers inlaid with 16th-century dark calf panels stamped in blind, the upper cover with the arms of Catherine of Aragon, the lower cover with the Royal arms (rubbed). Provenance: from the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), Ms 2912.
A contemporary manuscript of Naunton's important account of Elizabeth I's courtiers. The Fragmenta Regalia was compiled circa 1630 and remained in manuscript form at his death in 1635; it was first published in 1641, again in 1642, and a revised edition appeared in 1653 with the title as it appears in the present manuscript. Naunton, politician and writer, was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge; he was commissioned by Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex, to travel abroad in order to provide him with information on European affairs. Having entered Parliament in 1606 Naunton was knighted in 1614 and became Secretary of State in 1618.
