Vintage note: I had forgotten how attractive the '93s were, still are, until assembling notes to give a sort of overview.
The growiing season began well: early budding and successful flowering. However, the summer was warm and wet with mildew threats which had to be countered with a great deal of care and attention. Happily, August was hot and dry, with good ripening conditions which thickened the skins - fortuitously, as the grapes needed protection from the effects of fairly heavy rains in the third week of September. Most wines are ready but the most tannic still have a little way to go. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
Tasting note: At the opening tasting, holding back on the nose but also packed with flavour a suprisingly tough masculine finish. Almost exactly two years later, a more detailed and leisurely note: fairly deep; an immediately forthcoming nose, very rich, fragrant Pinot, sweet vanillin then a touch of caramel, still rich after four hours and even after six hours in the glass, a strawberry-like fruitiness.
