Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru--Vintage 1998
Domaine-bottled: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Bottle no. 7527
Tasting note: Moderate yield: 18.60 hl/ha, 1085 cases produced. At the Corney & Barrow opening tasting: fairly dark; in the glass poured at 8.15 am and sniffed nearly four hours later, it had a wonderfully deep, velvety scent, but in the freshly poured glass, it was totally different, more brambly. Italianate; medium sweet but with a coarser texture than the others, quite a bit of grip, in fact very tannic. More recently, at the vertical of St-Vivants, an attractive colour, slightly less deep, soft and with medium intensity; when first poured out, exactly the same description as before, Italiante again, with brambly fruit that opened up spicily and in the end, had a 'scrape of honey'; a rougher texture than the '99 and with a relatively harsh, immature, tannic finish. Last noted at the Domaine, Oct 2001 (****) Needs time Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
